Black Legislative Day at the Washington State Capitol
As part of our Civic Engagement Programs, Channel A TV Foundation proudly collaborates with the Kent Black Action Commission (KBAC) and other local organizations across King County to participate in the annual Black Legislative Day at the Washington State Capitol in Olympia. This impactful event provides a powerful platform for Black voices to be heard and for community members to actively engage in the legislative process.

Empowering Communities Through Civic Participation
Black Legislative Day is more than just a day at the Capitol, it’s a hands-on educational experience designed to empower youth, families, and community leaders to better understand how government works, and more importantly, how they can be a part of shaping the laws and policies that affect their lives.

Through structured townhall-style meetings with elected officials, panel discussions, policy briefings, and interactive Q&A sessions, participants gain direct access to Washington State Legislators, including Senators, Representatives, and key decision-makers. This event creates a space for authentic dialogue on pressing issues such as:
- Education equity
- Health disparities
- Housing and homelessness
- Criminal justice reform
- Economic development
- Youth programs and leadership

A Journey with Purpose: Transportation and Community Engagement
To make this experience accessible and inclusive, Channel A TV Foundation organizes community bus rides from various cities in King County, allowing youth, elders, and families to travel together and engage in meaningful conversations en route to Olympia. These rides are more than just transportation—they are moving classrooms that foster civic curiosity, leadership, and intergenerational dialogue.
We believe that every individual deserves a seat at the table, and by bringing our community directly to the Capitol, we help close the gap between policymakers and the people they serve.

Youth Engagement: Inspiring the Next Generation of Leaders
One of the pillars of Black Legislative Day is youth participation. We invite students, youth ambassadors, and young activists to experience the democratic process up close. Through pre-event orientation sessions, they are prepared to confidently engage with lawmakers, ask questions, and even share their own ideas for change. For many, this becomes a transformational moment, igniting lifelong involvement in public service and community advocacy.

Why It Matters
Black Legislative Day provides a collective platform for marginalized voices to be heard, bridging the gap between communities and state government. It reaffirms the importance of representation, accountability, and grassroots advocacy in building a more equitable Washington for all.

We welcome schools, churches, youth groups, families, and individuals to join us for this impactful civic journey.
